| Elgin pastor, civil rights advocate dies at 90 (The Courier News) The Rev. Brodie Burgess, a noted civil rights advocate and founder of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Elgin, died Aug. 28. He was 90. Burgess was best-known locally for organizing the Elgin chapter of the NAACP. He also was a member of the first Black Ministerial Alliance and co-founder of the Fair Housing Organization which helped provide housing assistance to Elgin's poorest residents. |
